By 2050 Sydney will be a city of 9.08 million and Melbourne 9.61 million.
Both cities though have enough room for future growth even without sprawl.
Tokyo, with a population of 9 million, is spread across about 2,000 sq km. London, with a similar population, occupies just 1,500 sq km.
Sydney by contrast has sprawled across 12,000 sq km and Melbourne 10,000 sq km.

Sure. The whole planet can become an urban sprawl, it's already on track to be 5 C warmer by the end of the century. Growth in whatever form is not what life needs It's part and parcel of Capital's death culture.
Mike, some of us are city born and bred and enjoy urban life with its many advantages of available infrastructures.
Marx and Engels in their various writings and experience of the new industrial slums and rural idiocy (a word like much of their terminology meant something far different from its present-day meaning) saw the division between town and countryside dissolving...the greening of cities so that they melded into one unified community. Urban sprawl or a growing suburbia?
But really the point of the post was again to expose the Malthusian Soylent Green projections of the over-populationists with Australia panicking over the size of its cities.
But as the past years forest fires, the recent floods and the drying up of the Murray-Darling river basin indicate, there is something wrong with Australia's settlement pattern which makes it vulnerable to climate change
