Conservative radio host Rush Limbaugh on Friday attacked Pope Francis as a “Marxist” for urging governments to redistribute wealth to the poor.
“The pope, ladies and gentleman, is back, saying — demanding — a
legitimate redistribution of wealth,” Limbaugh remarked. “Pope Francis
called today for governments to redistribute wealth to the poor in a new
spirit of generosity to help curb the economy of exclusion that is
taking hold today. The pope is describing charity, and that’s what the
church is for, and the Vatican is a country. But the pope is demanding
that the United Nations somehow use its influence to get member states
to redistribute wealth.”
“That’s Marxism, that’s socialism. That’s not charity. The church is
the thing where that kind of thing — charity — should come from, and he
is in charge of that, and the Catholic church is how many — what, what,
what, you think I’m getting in trouble here? What have I said that isn’t
true? What have I said that is politically incorrect, besides all of
it?”
This is not the first time that Limbaugh has accused Pope Francis of being a Marxist. After the pontiff published his Evangelii Gaudium, or Joy of the Gospel, the conservative radio host attacked the document as “pure Marxism.”
“Somebody has either written this for him or gotten to him,” he said
in 2013. “This is just pure Marxism coming out of the mouth of the
pope.”
