Planting Socialist Seeds

Planting trees is one of the most effective ways to reduce greenhouse gases. Tree planting is becoming an increasingly popular tool to combat climate change.

Thomas Crowther, Assistant Professor Environmental Systems Science at ETH Zurich, suggests that there is sufficient room in the world’s existing parks, forests, and abandoned land to plant 1.2 trillion additional trees, which would have the CO2 storage capacity to cancel out a decade of carbon dioxide emissions.

Combining forest inventory data from 1.2 million locations around the world and satellite images, the scientists found that there is abundant space to restore millions of acres of additional forests, not counting urban and agricultural land.

Capitalism is an economic system that puts profit before people and pillages the planet along the way. It’s clearer than ever that the present system can’t continue. It’s not sustainable, either economically or environmentally. Capitalism cannot reform itself.

We face global catastrophe. There now is an urgent need for people of the world to unite to build a better world. The imperative of halting climate change does not mean we push the mute button on the socialist alternative. To the contrary, we should bring our vision of socialism to public awareness; we are, after all, the Socialist Party and socialism is at the core of our identity. The ruling class, not surprisingly, shows no reticence in shaping popular misunderstanding of socialism. Capitalism means we the people believe we are the problem, and that we are the destroyers of the planet. Humanity’s future depends on embracing socialist ideas.
