COUNCIL TENANTS NEED NOT APPLY! (weekly poem)

COUNCIL TENANTS NEED NOT APPLY!

27/10/16. Prince Charles unveiled a statue of his grandmother
in ‘Queen Mother Square’ and opened the ‘Duchess of Cornwall
Inn’ in his dream architectural village estate of Poundbury.

Imagine the self-serving scene,
The toadying to royalty;
To Empire, Country and The Queen,
And all that misplaced loyalty.
The claustrophobic Prince Charles view,
That architecture should, instead;
Reveal the nonsense he thinks true,
Inside his jug-lug toupee’d head.

All the faux-Georgian facades,
And Chocolate boxy Urban lines;
A counterfeit Buck House of Cards, (1)
And the mock-Regency street signs.
A ‘Paint’ inside the Duchess Pub, (2)
And doff your cap to the Queen Mum;
The Duchy’s own unhealthy grub, (3)
How easy it is to succumb!

This Disneyesque Portmeirion,
This Mayfair out amongst the Shires;
With it’s George Wimpey Parthenon,
And God-Thanksgiving hollow spires.
And all for the ‘deserving poor’,
The ‘undeserving’ can get lost;
As they will find out more and more,
They cannot meet the Royal cost!

(1) One block of flats is shaped like the frontage of Buckingham Palace.

(2) Received Queen’s English.

(3) Duchy Ice Cream has been criticised for being too sugary.
