The Duchess of Cambridge has spawned a royal brat so we now have yet another member of the royal brood to leech off our labours and the loyal subjects of the Queen are celebrating.
Nowadays, it is doubtful if royalty fulfil any necessary function, even from the capitalist’s point of view. Many nations have dispensed with them. Of course, certain capitalists may feel a benefit such as the media moguls who can expand their coverage of the royal baby and increase their circulation or viewers. Also, the capitalists cannot afford to dethrone the monarch in this country, on account it may lead people to realise that the social inequalities in the land are in no way due to the crowned head and discover the cause in the director board-rooms. Behind the person of the Queen and her royal court, the capitalists can hide the fact that it is they in reality who rule.
As James Connolly said “The future of the working class requires that all political and social positions should be open to all men and women; that all privileges of birth or wealth be abolished, and that every man or woman born into this land should have an equal opportunity to attain to the proudest position in the land. The Socialist demands that the only birthright necessary to qualify for public office should be the birthright of our common humanity. Believing as we do that there is nothing on earth more sacred than humanity, we deny all allegiance to this institution of royalty ”
Royalty underpins a whole system of social stratification.
The Socialist Party often points out that the real political enemy of our class is not the queen and her parasitical family but the capitalists but it is out of the plunder taken from us by the employers which goes to pay for the maintenance of the royals. We look forward to the day when kings and queens will be no more. Until then, the only homage we owe “our” monarchy is our class hatred.
