“Our people and the planet are getting clobbered by climate change. Nearly half of humanity is living in the danger zone now. Many ecosystems are at the point of no return now. The facts are undeniable,” Antonio Guterres, the secretary-general of the United Nations (UN)
From Climate Breakdown| Countercurrents
“Climate breakdown is accelerating rapidly.”
“Many impacts will be more severe than originally predicted.”
“There is only a narrow chance left of avoiding its worst ravages.”
“Many areas will become unlivable.”
The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, Working Group II Sixth Assessment Report, 2022
Clearly, climate scientists are running scared of what the future holds. The IPCC warning contains a long list of potential horror stories. Nations are not doing enough to reduce emissions and protect themselves from climate hazards
The world is now fully aware that climate change is on a collision course with life. At some level, people know this. This is true because of media exposure of organized climate marches and protests across the globe for decades now. It’s doubtful that you could find one person that has not heard about global warming and climate change, although almost all chose to ignore the details.
Governments and corporations everywhere have been mostly missing in action when it comes to effective mitigation. GHG emissions continue to rise. We live in unimagined luxury and security but there are signs that pestilence, revolts and wars could be increasing. Covid and now the war in Ukraine make climate mitigation ever more difficult. Attempts by capitalist governments to remedy this inequality through pledges and promises have proven ineffective and inadequate. The devastating impacts of climate disasters are being felt disproportionately by the working people and the poor.
