Proclamation to Working People for Peace

Dum spiro spero’ – ‘As long as I breathe I hope’.

The Socialist Party is organised for the very purpose of destroying despotism and establishing democracy, to end the most brutal autocracy on the face of the earth, that of capitalist rule. The Socialist Party exists to arouse fellow working people from their dangerous sleep. The Socialist Party’s vision is one of a new world, a better world, a world worth fighting for, a world to win, an end of the miseries and exploitations we all endure and suffer.

Socialism and the nation-state are incompatible. Socialism cannot be brought about within national boundaries nor cannot be achieved within a single country. Socialism and the nation-state are incompatible. The Socialist Party is the only world political party. A socialist is a socialist irrespective of nationality, colour, or sex. The socialist recognises no national boundary lines. The nation in which one lives embraces the working class of the world. Every worker everywhere is our brother and sister. Across the borders of all lands, socialists clasp hands as comrades. The socialist movement, therefore, is a world movement. It knows of no conflicts of interests between the workers of one nation and the workers of another. It stands for the full freedom of all humanity.

The only sound policy for working people, the only policy in line with their class interests, is to stay clear of the nationalist movements and carry on steadily with the task of organising themselves on the economic field for the defence of their interests against their employers and organising on the political field for the ultimate achievement of socialism in co-operation with the rest of the world's workers.

There are no differences between the conditions under which exploitation is carried on in the different countries sufficient to make it worth the workers' while supporting one against the other in order to defend their subjection to one national group of capitalists rather than to another. National sovereignty is the bait to hook the gullible. Nationalists work on behalf of the capitalists for the good of all capitalists.

What the World Socialist Movement want is real independence. What we want is economic freedom from wage slavery. Supporting national independence is a monumental hoax.

What are we organised for? What is our chief bond of unity? What is our avowed object? The abolition of capitalism.

We work for the cooperative commonwealth. Our first aim must be winning to our cause the majority of working people by promoting revolutionary principles in the struggle for emancipation.

The World Socialist Movement unites and is guided by a cause. That cause today is a vision of humanity crossing into a new world of freedom, peace and brotherhood, a world free of conflict and strife. The socialist vision is one of prosperity and harmony.

We live in a fearsome and threatening world with all the signs of a society gone mad. “Each for all and all for each” is no utopian dream not the product of imagination, nor a mirage of the desert to allure and vanish. Socialism deals with the possible, with the practical of everyday life. There is a way out. It takes realism, it takes clear thinking, and it takes courage. It requires the road to a real, socialist, solution. It is written that “hope springs eternal in the human breast,” and it is also written that “hope deferred maketh the heart sick.”

Manipulation of people’s thinking has relied upon the old tactic of divide and conquer. The ruling class understands that as long as people lack a vision and remain confused about who is their friend and who is their foe, it can maintain its supremacy. Socialists must win the battle for the hearts and minds of the people.
