Quote of the Day

"What is more troubling for many of us in the States is that those facilities are being run by private for-profit providers, something that the current administration also supports the expansion of. When you make jailing profitable, you can be sure that more people will be jailed.” said Marsha Levick, deputy director and chief counsel at the Juvenile Law Centre in Philadelphia

overall U.S. prison populations have declined at modest rates. The private prison population has shrunk by 8% since its peak in 2012, while the overall prison population has fallen by 5% since its peak in 2009. (The state private prison population peaked in 2012 with 96,774 prisoners, while the federal private prison population reached its peak a year later in 2013, with 41,159 prisoners.

Thnks for that info. Non-Americans like myself are confused by the prison system in America.
Figures for those held on remand, as we say in the UK, awaiting trial, is approximately 500,000 people in jail in the US awaiting trial who cannot afford bail costs $9 billion a year.

If all prisoners are counted (including juvenile, territorial, ICE, Indian country, and military), then in 2008 the US had around 24.7% of the world's 9.8 million prisoners

The United States incarcerates more of its youth than any other country in the world. According to federal data from 2011, around 40% of the nation's juvenile inmates are housed in private facilities.Remember the corruption cse a while back?
