The gap between rich and poor in Canada in terms of home ownership has widened with those in lower income brackets less likely to own their home now than 35 years ago, according to Statistics Canada.
The home ownership rate among those aged 35 to 54 in the lower income group was 46% in 2006, compared with 62% in 1971.
A spokesperson for StatsCan said trend may be the result of several factors. Family income among higher wage earners has risen much more quickly than those in lower brackets, while the cost of housing has also gained, he said.
