SOYMB blog certainly believes that people should be concerned with the American interference in Venezuela and that the threat of an American-orchestrated coup with the possibility of an ensuing civil war in Venezuela is a real one.
The US Secretary of State has appointed Elliot Abrams as the American Special Envoy on Venezuela.
Who is Abrams?
The Observer said that Abrams had advance knowledge of, and “gave a nod to,” the Venezuelan coup attempt of 2002 against Hugo Chávez.
Amnesty International accused him of covering up atrocities committed by the military forces of U.S.-backed governments, such as those in El Salvador, Honduras, and Guatemala, and the rebel Contras in Nicaragua.
Abrams is widely remembered in Central America, from his time in the Reagan administration, when he tried to whitewash a massacre of a thousand men, women and children by US-funded death squads in El Salvador, when he was assistant secretary of state for human rights. In his book Reagan, Bush, and Right–Wing Politics, Philip Burch describes Abrams’ unapologetic attitude regarding the excesses of the war in Nicaragua.
Abrams also helped Oliver North to organise the covert financing of Contra rebels in Nicaragua behind the back of Congress, which had cut off funding. He then lied to Congress about his role, twice. He pleaded guilty to both counts in 1991 but was pardoned by George HW Bush
Abrams was an enthusiastic advocate of the Iraq invasion. Abrams has been a fervent supporter of launching strikes on Syria. Abrams has on numerous occasions sought to lay the groundwork for direct U.S. confrontation with Iran. Abrams has established strong links with Israeli's ruling party, the Likud. Abrams vociferously opposed the Obama administration’s decision to try to normalize U.S.-Cuba relations.
Yes, we should be very afraid when America appoints such a man to carry out its Madura and Venezuela policy.
