Suffer little children

Little has changed from 2006 to 2011 for Indigenous communities in Canada according to a new report by the Canadian Center for Policy Alternatives.

“The shameful reality in Canada is that devastatingly high child poverty on reserves is getting worse, not better,” said David Macdonald Senior Economist with the CCPA.

The research found that of First Nation children, "51 percent live in poverty, rising to 60 percent for children on reservations. Child poverty rates on reservations worsened between 2005 and 2010." The children of immigrants have a poverty rate of 32 percent, while children of color have a poverty rate of 22 percent. Non-status First Nations children had a rate of 30 percent, Inuit children a 25 percent poverty rate and of Metis children 23 percent live in poverty. Children who don't fall into any of the above categories had a poverty rate of 13 percent, which is similar to the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development average.
