May I introduce:
Vandana Shiva - philosopher, environmental activist,
and eco feminist. Shiva, currently based in Delhi, has authored more
than 20 books and over 500 papers in leading scientific and technical
journals. She was trained as a physicist and received her Ph.D. in
physics from the University of Western Ontario, Canada. She was awarded
the Right Livelihood Award in 1993. She is the founder of Navdanya which can be found at http://www.navdanya.org/
Below is the link to her recent article 'Seed Monopolies, GMOs And Farmers Suicides In India' which is a response by her to an article published on 1st May 2013 in Nature by Natasha Gilbert titled “Case studies: A hard look at GM crops”
Genetically modified organisms or crops (GMOs) are well known to be a contentious area for heated debate. Vandana Shiva is also well known as a fervent opponent of GMOs and a supporter of the welfare of millions of farmers in India, hundreds of thousands of whom have committed suicide in recent years for reasons which she succinctly explains. I doubt that anyone except the stubbornly ignorant could be disappointed with her argument.
Corporate control, seed monopolies, ever-increasing indebtedness and the horrific rise in rates of suicide following the introduction of genetically modified cotton seed are what she exposes here.
