City-town dwelling Indians are just 10 rupees better off. 52.9% of the total expenditure is for food in villages while a much higher 42.6% in the towns. This data comes from National Sample Survey Organisation (NSSO), a governmental body.
521 rupees is all that the bottom 5% of the population has to survive a month in rural areas and 700 rupees in urban ones.
As for the media acclaimed rising middle class, the figures show the illusion. The average monthly expenditure of top 5 % of Indian population at a lowly 4,481 rupees in the countryside and only 10,282 rupees in the cities.
