Sadly, the working class can to-day only celebrate Margaret Thatcher’s physical passing away and not the end of her politics. Thatcher is dead but what is called Thatcherism lives on.
When asked asked in 2002 what her greatest achievement was, Thatcher replied: “Tony Blair and New Labour." (The Blair Witch Project?)
Nor has the present Labour Party leaders repudiated Thatcher’s policies and they certainly have no intention of reversing any. As Cameron’s ConDems continue in her tradition, Miliband intends to follow basically the same policies.
The defeat of the miners’ strike was a blow to the strength of the labour movement that the victory of the poll tax protests cannot compensate for. It was not workers united that defeated Thatcher, but a stab in the back by her own ministers.
Rejoice but let us now also end the retreat and begin to resist.
