Age UK, formerly Age Concern and Help the Aged, carried out a survey which aimed to highlight the anxiety felt by much of the elderly population as the winter season gets underway. More than half of all UK residents aged 60 and above are likely to be dreading the winter. Elderly Britons living at the lower end of the social scale are twice as likely to fear a severe cold snap as those in the upper tier.
"What lies behind this widespread fear of cold weather are pressing social issues, such as nearly two million pensioners living in poverty and millions of older households anxious about being able to afford keeping warm this winter," said Michelle Mitchell, charity director of Age UK.
