FLOODGATE Part 2 of 3 - poem

FLOODGATE
Part 2 of 3. The Somerset Leveller!

(Prince Charles visited the Somerset Levels
flood victims a few days after Minister,
Owen Paterson, was heckled & jostled)

Prince Charles, ‘Environmentalist’,
Has done his level best;
To reassure all flooded folk,
In his fact-finding quest.
But history repeats itself,
We’ve seen these sops before;
The bromides and the platitudes,
The populace in awe!

King Edward, many years ago,
In Nineteen-Thirty-Six;
Observing closed Welsh collieries,
Demanded a ‘quick-fix’.
He cried out “Something must be done!”
And thought it was a crime;
Although within three weeks he had,
Served out his Royal time. (1)

And if you ask exactly what,
Was done in the King’s rule,
The answer, unsurprisingly,
Was ‘zilch’, ‘nix’ and ‘naff-all’!
For then as now some foolish plebs,
Cheered loud till they were hoarse;
So confident that Royalty,
Would change things in due course.

Today the flooded residents,
Up to their knees in mud;
Were being sold the usual pup,
And flogged a Royal dud!
Prince Charles may walk on water to,
Those leading all the cheers;
But it proves how politically,
They’re wet behind the ears!

(1) The King visited 19/11/1936
and abdicated on 11/12/1936.
