Socialist Stanza No. 13

Arthur Draws the Sword from the Stone

(Labour Theory of Value)

He firstly mined the ruddy stone,

Felled timber and dug the pit

To burn that wood into charcoal.

Then fired the ore until it

Let the iron run freely into

A rough mould to cool before

Heat and hammer, heat and hammer

Shaped the blade, which would ensure

All brittleness was driven out.

Edges were honed razor keen

And a finely tooled hilt fitted:

A sword where once stone had been.

There was no mystery or magic

Drawing that sword from the stone,

Just a power possessed by Arthur,

The power of labour alone.
