Socialist Sonnet No. 93

New Year Unresolved

School, having been occupied to billet

Soldiers, is blown apart and left burning,

The numbered dead lying beyond learning.

However outrageous the national debt

There’s money enough for bullets and bombs,

Even as nurses stand on picket lines

And food banks become overdrawn. The signs

Of climate change are clear; snow becomes

By its absence, or accumulation

Like capital in trillionaires’ accounts,

A marker of remarkable events.

Beyond the mean confines of the nation,

A whole world of possibilities lies

For humanity, if only it tries.
