Socialist Sonnet No. 80

Bloodsuckers

When a befuddled minister of state

Announces some novel fiscal measure,

Deep in the shadows hunters of treasure

Measure their wealth against the exchange rate.

As vampires they’re always prepared to drain

A nation’s life-blood in gruesome amounts

From innocent folks’ vulnerable accounts,

Greedily doing so again and again.

All new ministers very quickly learn

To let such foul dealings pass them by.

Then, on leaving public life they’ll not die,

But, become engorged vampires in their turn.

And so this horror story will persist

Until folks decide vampires shouldn’t exist.
