Socialist Sonnet No. 69

 Confidence?

Propriety or self-interest? Now there’s

A knotty dialectic for all those

Squatting on government benches. Who knows

The resolution or heartfelt despair

Of backbenchers, who are all too aware

That their leader’s perfidy clearly shows,

As public cynicism grows and grows.

Even knowing what is right, who will dare

Rebel with no guarantee such a vote

Won’t be unseating. Should the leader fall,

Why then another one will be arranged,

Prestige and privilege are readily sought.

There will always be someone to install

And then, after all, nothing will have changed.
