About 50 people defied a government ban on Friday morning to take part in a protest in the Ukrainian capital where they called for negotiations with the Russians over the soldiers’ fate.
Wives of Ukrainian soldiers under siege in Mariupol gathered in Kyiv to demand the evacuation of their husbands have been dispersed by police who gave army conscription notices to men who joined the protest.
Rather than agree to a Russian offer of a surrender and evacuation it appears that the Ukrainian government has a view that the death and sacrifice of its soldiers in Mariupol presents it with a propaganda opportunity to advance the "glory" of Ukraine.
