Opposing Politician's Greenwash

 

Members of the Socialist Party the World Socialist Movement hold much sympathy with Greta Thunberg's sentiments when she expressed her view that:

"This COP26 is so far just like the previous COPs and that has led us nowhere. They have led us nowhere."

"Inside COP there are just politicians and people in power pretending to take our future seriously, pretending to take the present seriously of the people who are being affected already today by the climate crisis. Change is not going to come from inside there. That is not leadership - this is leadership."

"We're sick and tired of it and we're going to make the change whether they like it or not," she added. The Swedish teenager led cries of "climate justice" and "no more blah, blah, blah".

Warning after warning has signalled the enormity of the global warming problem and still, production for profit continues regardless, continuing to ignore the degradation of the planetary environment and the plight of climate refugees. So many agreements to no avail. The power of the wealthy, the corporations, the capitalists and political parties in the service of the capitalists have not allowed things to change because that would affect ongoing profits. The capitalist system is far from democratic. Rather than be divided by so many single issues, what is required is that as members of a global population we recognise that all of these issues are just parts of the whole, all should be gathered together under the umbrella of a true and inclusive democracy.

Our attacks on climate change must go for the jugular, capitalism itself, rather than its symptoms.
