Socialist Sonnet No. 15

Litter Picking

In gutter, in lay-by and in hedgerow,

Liberally broadcast over the grass verge,

Eyesore scatter of cans and bottles merge:

On this selfish Isle, we reap what others sow.

Self-centred harvest it appears to be,

Seeming denial of any social sense,

The challenge of change looks to be immense;

Except, this litter is being picked for free

By community volunteers. No force,

Inducement or wage required, just the grace

To aspire to make this world a better place:

Energy for change comes from such a source.

Who discounts socialism at the start,

May grow to socialism from the heart.
