Socialist Sonnet No. 10

 Shopped Out

The High Street is run down to a low point,

With all of the shops shut up and shuttered.

This is the end of commerce it’s muttered,

The local economy’s out of joint.

But, it’s also the mall and the outlet park,

Retail therapy is looking quite sick;

Department stores are being cut to the quick.

Footfall is falling, the future looks dark.

From wardrobes to wine are being bought online,

Commodities just a mouse click away,

And all delivered to your door next day

By zero hours drivers. The future’s fine.

Workers easily employed and dismissed:

Yes, the future’s fine, for the capitalist.
