Libya's Civil War has Not Ended

At least 20,000 mercenaries are in Libya causing a “serious crisis” and weapons continue pouring in, a United Nations official warned. Thousands – including Russians, Syrians, Sudanese and Chadians – have been brought in by rival sides, according to UN experts.

“That is a shocking violation of Libyan sovereignty … a blatant violation of the arms embargo,” UN acting envoy for Libya Stephanie Williams explained.

Since the US and the EU deposed Gaddafi the country has been dominated and divided between two bitterly opposed administrations: the UN-brokered Government of National Accord (GNA) and the rival administration of Khalifa Haftar.

1.3 million of Libya’s more than 6.8 million people are expected to need humanitarian assistance in January. Only 13 of Libya’s 27 power plants are functioning.
