Food for thought

  • Factory farms produce three times the sewage that the entire U.S. population produces: 500 million tons of manure yearly.
  • The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations says the methane produced by the meat industry accounts for nearly 20% of global greenhouse gas emissions. Methane as a gas is more than 20 times more of a contributor to global warming than an equal amount of carbon dioxide.
  • 450,000 square kilometers of former Amazon rainforest in Brazil is now deforested for cattle ranching.
  • Another 12,141 square kilometers have been chopped down to make room for growing for chicken feed.
