176 years ago today the author and poet Herman Melville started his journey to the South Seas on the whaler Acushnet. He later took part in a mutiny, was imprisoned in Tahiti, escaped and resumed his travels. In 1851 Moby Dick was published. This work is reviewed from a socialist perspective here
