Fact of the Day

A new report says Toronto has the highest percentage of children living in poverty of any large city in Canada — 27 per cent.

In Montreal, 25 per cent of children were living in poverty in 2014.

At 24 per cent, Winnipeg was third.

Only half of children in families with an annual income of less than $30,000 were found to participate in out-of-school art or sports programs, compared with 93 per cent of students in families with an income of $100,000 or more.

The number of people accessing Canadian food banks increased for the third consecutive year in 2016, and is now 28% higher than before the 2008-2009 recession, according to a national study released today by Food Banks Canada.
In total, 863,492 people received food from a food bank in March 2016; 307,535 were children – more than one-third of all people accessing the service.

A few years back when elected premier of Ontario, Dalton McGuinty pledged to eliminate child poverty - not poverty itself. One wonders how a government can lift children out of poverty but not their parents. The answer is they can't.
