Fact of the Day

Strict standards of retailers and "consumer fussiness" contribute to farm level waste. It is estimated that 20 to 40 per cent of fruit and vegetables grown in the UK are rejected on cosmetic grounds before they even get to the shops. Crops that don't make the grade are ploughed back into the field or used for animal feed.
