Compassion stops at Calais

Anti-immigrant feelings are whipped up by the government and its loyal opposition. The racist and menacing “Go Home” van stunt, has been ended. The plan to charge visitors from “high-risk” countries a £3,000 bond to enter the country, repayable on departure will no longer be implemented. But the rest of the inhumane legislation against new and old migrants is still in the pipe-line and the Labour Party will not be offering any opposition to them, only improvements. Landlords, clinics and hospitals will have to check the passports of all who come to their doors. So will banks, driving test centres and schools in due course.

One in three NHS workers was trained overseas. Without them, there would be no effective health service. Yet we will see their mums and dads, their brothers and sisters, and their cousins, quizzed on eligibility, treated as a suspect scrounger if they dare have a serious mishap and end up in Accident and Emergency.

The campaign of misinformation and scare-mongering  against immigrants are the same as employed against the poor, disabled and unemployed. For capitalism to survive , it needs scapegoats for its failings.
