Our Common Home

Protesters around the world are increasingly being charged under anti-terrorist laws. In Russia 30 environmental campaigners have been arrested and detained for being pirates which carries a maximum jail sentence of 15 years. Activists from the Greenpeace ship Arctic Sunrise attempted to climb onto the Gazprom Prirazlomnaya oil rig in the Pechora Sea in protest against the perceived high risk to the environment of offshore drilling in the Arctic. Russian coast guards then descended from helicopters onto the ship to arrest the protesters and the ship was towed to Murmansk.

Offshore drilling in the Arctic is demonstrably unsafe. There are no credible spill response plans and there's virtually no safety cover to implement them anyway. The ecological impact of a spill would be horrendous.

Greenpeace wants the world to designate the upper Arctic a “global common place.” The World Socialist Movement seek to make the whole world a common place.
