The Red Aristocracy

Kong Dongmei, the granddaughter of Chairman Mao has been named on China's rich list, with a fortune of nearly £530 million. Ms Kong's fortune is also another embarrassing example of how China is ruled by a "red aristocracy". The children of China's revolutionary leaders have been among those who profited the most from the Communist party's grip on large swathes of the country's economy, milking their connections to get rich.

Mao Xinyu, the Chairman's only grandson, a major general in the People's Liberation Army, had previously promised that "the House of Mao will never engage in business".
