This
is an emergency. We’re
heading towards a possible collapse of civilisation. We face an
environmental emergency that could bring down civilisation. We’re
in dire straits. Greenland and both the Poles are melting. Forests
are burning from Siberia to Australia to the Amazon. If not suffering
record-breaking heat waves and devastating droughts, countries are
confronted by powerful hurricanes and deadly floods. We're seeing
natural disasters happening across every part of the planet. We're seeing
entire communities being decimated by extreme weather events. Climate
change is the greatest existential threat we face since the advent of
global nuclear war.
People
are starting to pay attention. They are finally treating the crisis
like a crisis. Our planet is in jeopardy — let's act like it is.
While
politicians say there is a need for policies to mitigate climate
change, people call out for action, for deeds, not words. Protests
have emboldened the youth worldwide. They are speaking out against
complacency. It is their future that they are trying to protect from
the land-grabbers who set rain-forests alight in search for profit.
The youth of today wish a livable world of tomorrow to inherit.
The
Socialist Party cannot let the idealism of the younger generation be
poisoned by cynicism and apathy. We cannot permit them to be disappointed and reduced to despair by failure. We offer answers to the issues they seek to redress. This is our opportunity to stand
alongside our children and grandchildren for a better future for all people.
Unlike
the toxic rise in nationalism and right-wing ideologies, many of
this new generation of youth concentrate their concern upon the World
and its environmental problems. They promote the benefits of a
collective future, not one based on individual self-interest. The
young eco-activists are understanding that to solve the climate
crisis, people must lay aside all what divides us and substitute unity
and sharing as society's prevailing values.
These
are the principles upon which a new world will be built.
