Socialist Sonnet No.7

 Remembrance Day 2020

Assemblage in chasubles and dark suits

Around polished black slab of Belgian stone

Beneath which there lies, forever alone,

The unknown soldier: Thus today recruits

The past into service. Busbied guardsman

Bugles ‘The Last Post’. In this way he

Brings the nation to attention to see

Their glorious dead on parade again.

All on TV, of course, this covid year,

When death, once more, has not been glorious.

But, while it seemed relentless, victorious,

Workers were key, stood firm, overcame fear

On wards, in care homes and labs, wherever

Was a need for workers to deliver.
