North London Branch Meeting (18/10)

Time: 8PM 18th Oct
Venue: Torriano Meeting House,
99 Torriano Avenue.
London NW5 2RX

The case for the Socialist Party is based on the irreconcilable conflict of interests between the working class, who produce all wealth, and the capitalist class, who own the instruments of production and the wealth produced. All the will-o'-the-wisp reforms of the other political parties tried out over the last 150 years were futile to deal with the evils rooted in a profit-making social system based on the exploitation of one class by another. The only remedy was for society to own and democratically control the means of production, to produce for use and not for profit. The Socialist Party alone of all Parties consistently maintains, amidst the confusion of capitalist parties old and "new," that the only hope of the workers is socialism.

The Socialist Party is opposed to reformism because:
(a) it makes capitalism run more smoothly
(b) it is the capitalists who pay for reforms and decide which ones, and
(c) we have had them for 150 years and they have not led to Socialism and never will. At most, they are a temporary appeasement to some sections of the working class and can be withdrawn, e.g. free milk for schoolchildren.

A ocialists party must maintain independence and have no compromise with capitalism. It neither supports nor opposes reforms even if they appear to benefit workers at some time.
