No Happy Families

The Court of Appeal upheld Home Office rules for UK citizens who want their overseas non-EU spouses to live with them in Britain that they must possess a minimum income of £18,600 (This rises to £22,400 for families with a child, and a further £2,400 for each extra child.)

121 of the 422 occupations listed in the 2011 UK earnings data had annual average did not have earnings over £18,600, as one of the appeal judges acknowledged.

A Home Office impact assessment published in June 2012 estimated that the chosen income threshold would prevent 17,800 family visas being granted every year.

The court decision was greeted as a success by the political party that declares itself a supporter of family values...and then puts a price upon that family.
