The report discovered the average household debt in Britain currently stands at £8,590 excluding mortgages. And this rises to £17,896 if the amount is based on the number of households that have some form of unsecured loan. But with home loans taken into account, this figure leaps again to reach £56,690.

According to a recently-published report by Credit Action, individuals now owe more than the whole country produces in a year.
